Liberty City at night from the air, Algonquin's lit towers packed along the water.

GTA IV

City

Liberty City

The series' stand-in for New York, and the setting of eight Grand Theft Auto titles. The 1997 original drew it from overhead as one of three cities; the 3D era built it as three islands, opened one bridge at a time; the HD era rebuilt it from scratch as four boroughs with the state of Alderney across the water.

On the ground

The 3D city is a chain of islands with a class system. Portland is industry and the Leone family: docks, a Chinatown and a red-light district. Staunton Island has the banks, the police headquarters and the stadium. Shoreside Vale, the last to open, keeps the hillside money, a reservoir dam and the airport.

The HD city spreads out instead. Broker, where GTA IV begins, faces the dense grid of Algonquin over the river; Bohan sits north of everything and has the least; and the small islands get the odd jobs: a statue on Happiness Island, the sewage works on Charge Island, an abandoned asylum on Colony Island.

Rebuilt from nothing for the HD era: it shares no street with the three-island city the 3D era built.
