It happened

An Extended Look

Thursday 27 August 2026

The longest look at Grand Theft Auto VI since the game was announced, and the last major showing before the game launches in November.

Everything Rockstar confirmed is now part of this page — the essentials, the cast and the map of Leonida below all reflect it.

The gameplay reveal

Rockstar published Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on 27 August 2026, and states it was captured entirely from in-game footage running on a PlayStation 5.

It closes on Rockstar's own cards: the title, the capture note, and 19 November 2026.

Platforms

Platforms

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar has not announced a version for any other platform.

Setting

Confirmed by Rockstar · Source

The state

Grand Theft Auto VI is set in the state of Leonida.

Vice City

Vice City returns, as Leonida's principal city.

Beyond the city

Rockstar has also named Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Grassrivers, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.

Researched on the ground

Rockstar says teams have travelled to Miami and the surrounding area repeatedly over the past decade, and that the studio keeps a research presence in the city.

Reported by trusted sources

Murals by the people who paint them

Rockstar says more than fifty working street artists were commissioned to produce murals for the game.

Reported by trusted sources

The crowd

Rockstar says new tools were built for the series' most varied population, spanning body types, ages, tattoos, piercings and clothing that changes with where in the state you are.

Dazed reports that a Rockstar studio is given over almost entirely to the people who walk around in this game.

Story

Confirmed by Rockstar · Source

Leads

Jason and Lucia are the game's two leads.

The premise

A score that goes wrong pulls the pair into a criminal conspiracy running across the state.

Where Lucia starts

Lucia begins the story newly released from the Leonida Penitentiary.

Where Jason starts

Jason is in the Keys, working for the drug runners who operate there.

Jason before the Keys

Jason Duval grew up among criminals and spent time in the Army before the Keys.

Where Jason lives

Jason Duval lives rent-free at one of Brian Heder's properties, in exchange for helping with local shakedowns.

Lucia's family

Lucia Caminos was taught to fight by her father, and her mother has wanted a better life since the two of them lived in Liberty City.

What the two leads are to each other

Rockstar leaves the pair's relationship unresolved: Lucia Caminos sees a life with Jason as her way out, while for Jason Duval meeting her could be the best or the worst thing that has happened to him.

In Rockstar's words, Jason “knows how he'd like it to turn out but right now, it's hard to tell.”

Raul's crew

Raul Bautista works with a crew he recruits, and his escalating scores are pushing them toward a decision.

The opening job

The presentation opens on Jason and Lucia collecting goods connected to Boobie Ike at a run-down residential block. The job is compromised, police arrive, and it ends as a running gunfight through corridors and rooms.

Seen in official material

Driving for Bautista

Jason and Lucia work as getaway drivers for Raul Bautista, who directs them from the back seat. They lose a four-star pursuit, burn the getaway car, leave in a van, and are paid afterwards.

Seen in official material

The Megamundo opening

The pair are hired as security for a media executive at the Vice City launch of Megamundo, a Spanish-language broadcaster opening its first American headquarters. Armed men storm the tower and take hostages, and Jason and Lucia end up fighting on separate floors.

The executive's name is reported rather than published: Rockstar has printed no spelling of it, and the outlets covering the sequence are transcribing what they heard.

Seen in official material

How Rockstar frames it

Rockstar describes the game as consciously staged as a Bonnie and Clyde story.

Cast

Confirmed by Rockstar · Source

Named so far

Rockstar has named eight characters: Lucia Caminos, Jason Duval, Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder.

All eight are billed by full name in reader-facing copy on three separate surfaces: the People navigation, each character's own page heading, and the title of each character's clip in the video library.

Real Dimez

Real Dimez is a duo — Bae-Luxe and Roxy.

Only Raw Records

Boobie Ike and Dre'Quan Priest are partners in a record label, Only Raw Records.

Rockstar describes it as the venture Boobie is most invested in, and as one that has yet to produce a hit.

Real Dimez are signed

Real Dimez are signed to Only Raw Records by Dre'Quan Priest.

Real Dimez before the label

Real Dimez had an early hit single with a local rapper, DWNPLY, before signing to Only Raw Records.

Rockstar puts five years and, in their words, “a whole lot of trouble” between that single and the signing.

Dre'Quan and the club

Dre'Quan Priest has been booking acts into Boobie Ike's strip club.

Rockstar suggests that may be ending: with Real Dimez signed, he is setting his sights on the wider Vice City scene.

Cal and Brian

Cal Hampton is an associate of Brian Heder's, as Jason is.

Brian's household

Brian Heder's third wife is Lori, and the two of them work his boat yard together.

Gameplay

Seen in official material

Two playable leads

Jason and Lucia are both playable, and the presentation shows the player moving between them: while the pair travel together, in the middle of a fight, and when they are on different floors of a building.

Rockstar has shown the switch rather than described it. No first-party page states the rule, so when it is available, how long it takes and whether a mission can withhold it are all open.

The lead you are not playing

The protagonist the player is not controlling acts on their own rather than trailing behind: in the opening raid Lucia fights through the building alongside Jason, and in the Bautista pursuit the passenger handles the shooting while the driver drives.

The relationship

Jason and Lucia remain criminal partners, but Rockstar says the player can influence how close the two become, with consequences for how their story plays out.

Nothing has been shown of how that is expressed to a player. There is no meter on screen in the presentation and Rockstar has described no scale, no threshold and no ending it leads to.

Reported by trusted sources

The Criminal Profile

Rockstar's preview briefings describe a Criminal Profile running alongside the immediate Wanted Level, so that a consistent pattern of behaviour changes how the world treats Jason and Lucia rather than only how the police respond to the last thing they did.

PC Gamer reports that violence entered into reasonably does not necessarily count against it, that escalating a situation does, and that small decencies count the other way. Rockstar has published no score, scale or category.

Reported by trusted sources

The Wanted Level

The Wanted Level returns and governs immediate police attention. Four stars are on screen during the Bautista pursuit, which draws patrol cars, a helicopter and a sustained chase across the city.

Four is what the presentation shows. It is not the maximum, and nothing in the broadcast establishes what the maximum is.

Lifestyle shows

Rockstar says the two leads carry their habits visibly: food affects body weight, exercise builds and tones muscle, and going without sleep for long enough shows in how they look.

Described as a visible effect rather than a statistic. No number, threshold or duration has been published.

Reported by trusted sources

Getting into a car

Stealing a vehicle is no longer one universal action: the presentation offers a choice of ways in at the door, including breaking the window and using a slim jim, and Rockstar's briefings say some vehicles need specialist tools.

Safehouses

Rockstar says safehouses are built to be far more interactive than a traditional Grand Theft Auto save point — in their comparison, closer to the camps of Red Dead Redemption 2 in how much they feel like a home.

Reported by trusted sources

Roads built to be harder

Rockstar says Leonida's roads were deliberately made narrower and closer to real-world scale, so that driving badly costs something.

Dazed reports the vehicle handling team includes people with real race driving experience.

Reported by trusted sources

Aiming

A slowed-down aiming mode appears in the closing sequence, picking out regions of a target's body in red and in yellow.

Rockstar has not named the mode and has not said what the two colours mean. Reading them as lethal and disabling is an interpretation, and it is one the analyses that made it are credited with rather than one published here as fact.

Social feeds are playable

The in-game social feeds are working interfaces rather than set dressing: a live stream, its scrolling comments and the phone it runs on all appear inside active gameplay rather than in a cutaway.

Game Informer reports a sequence in which the pair take a car with a streamer in the boot, and the pursuit that follows is broadcast on the streamer's own feed.

Context-sensitive interaction

A prompt system runs through the whole presentation, offering specific actions on whatever is in front of the player — people, animals, vehicle doors, lifts, and objects around the flat.

Things to do besides crime

Outside the jobs, the presentation shows fishing, kayaking, diving, jet skis and airboats, parachuting, weight training, basketball, a shooting range, circuit and off-road and street racing, nightclubs, and backyard wrestling.

Most of these appear in a montage. That they are in the game is what the footage supports; that each is a repeatable activity with its own rules is not, and Game Informer's own account of them is careful to call them potential.

The cast

Who you will be running with

The leads and the people around them, as Rockstar has introduced them so far.

All characters
Lucia at a nightclub in a sequinned top, arms folded, looking at the camera under coloured light with dancers around her.

Protagonist

Lucia Caminos

Lucia learned to fight before she learned much else, and defending her family is what put her inside the Leonida Penitentiary. She comes out with a plan and no intention of going back — after the life her mother has been describing since their Liberty City days, and done waiting to be given it.

Jason leaning on a bar counter in a cap and vest, looking at the camera, neon signs and other drinkers behind him.

Protagonist

Jason Duval

Jason grew up among people who made their money at the edges of the law, and a stretch in the Army did little to change the direction of travel. He is in the Keys now, earning from the drug runners who work that water, and telling himself it is temporary.

  • Cal on a crazy golf course in a palm-print shirt and bucket hat, a putter over his shoulder.

    Cal Hampton

    Jason's friend

Cal keeps to himself with a scanner tuned to Coast Guard traffic and a drink within reach. He is content at the bottom of the map and would happily stay there. The trouble is that Jason is not.

  • Boobie sitting back in an office armchair in a patterned jacket and sunglasses, holding a roll of banknotes.

    Boobie Ike

    Vice City businessman

A Vice City name who made the crossing from the street to the balance sheet and never lets anybody forget either half of it. His holdings run to property, a club and a recording studio.

  • Dre'Quan in a blue suit at a poolside party at night, a drink in his hand.

    Dre'Quan Priest

    Music promoter

More dealmaker than enforcer. Dre'Quan sold on the street with his attention somewhere else entirely — music was always the plan, and he is working the Vice City scene from the business side of it now.

  • The two members of Real Dimez recording together at studio microphones under pink light.

    Real Dimez

    Bae-Luxe and Roxy

Bae-Luxe and Roxy have been a double act since school. They turned a sideline relieving local dealers of their takings into an audience, built on hard tracks and a feed that never stops.

  • Raul taking a phone call in a dimly lit room, surveillance monitors glowing behind him.

    Raul Bautista

    Bank robber

A bank robber of long standing who recruits on charm and nerve. Every job he plans carries more risk than the last, and the crew around him will eventually have to choose between following him up and walking.

  • Brian leaning out of the passenger window of a pickup truck on a wooded road, a younger man driving.

    Brian Heder

    Keys smuggler

A survivor of the Keys smuggling era who still moves product through his boat yard, with his third wife Lori alongside him. Jason has a roof from him, and the rent is paid in favours.

The world

Leonida, end to end

Vice City is where it starts. The state around it is where Rockstar says the story actually runs.

All locations

State

Leonida

The state the game takes place in, and the reach of the conspiracy Jason and Lucia end up inside. Vice City is its best-known address, but the state runs a long way past it.

Lucia CaminosJason Duval

  • The Vice City sign lit against a pink sunset as an airliner passes low overhead.

    City

    Vice City

The city Leonida is known for, and the centre of gravity for most of what happens in it — the money, the music business and the people with an interest in both.

    Lucia CaminosJason Duval

  • An aerial view of the Leonida Keys, a highway bridge running between wooded islands with a seaplane in flight and the Vice City skyline on the horizon.

    Region

    Leonida Keys

The island chain at the southern end of the state, and long-standing ground for anyone moving product by water. Jason works here; Brian has been working here a great deal longer.

    Jason Duval

  • The neon sign of the Starlet Motel in Port Gellhorn at dusk, palm trees and a pickup truck beyond it.

    Region

    Port Gellhorn

Leonida's forgotten coast. The tourists stopped coming back and left cheap motels, dead attractions and empty strip malls behind them; the economy that took over runs on painkillers, malt liquor and whatever the truck stops sell.

  • Open sawgrass wetland in the Grassrivers under a wide sky, alligators in the shallow water and a pickup running ahead of a police car, with an airboat and a helicopter behind.

    Region

    Grassrivers

The wetlands, and the part of the state nobody has managed to tame. Alligators are what the place is known for; they are not the most dangerous thing in the water, and the mangroves hide stranger things still.

  • Crop fields burning at sunset in Ambrosia, smoke drifting across the rows beneath power lines, with a plant and its chimneys on the far ridge.

    Region

    Ambrosia

The middle of the state, where industry and old-fashioned values still hold, whatever it costs to keep them. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery is what the place works for; the local biker club runs most of what it does not.

  • A road winding through a wooded gorge in Mount Kalaga National Park, red rock walls on both sides and a bridge crossing high above it.

    Landmark

    Mount Kalaga National Park

A national landmark on the state's northern border, and the outdoors end of Leonida — hunting, fishing and off-road trails through thick backwoods. The people living out in them have gone to some trouble to be left alone.
