The places of Grand Theft Auto

States, cities, districts and landmarks, each nested inside the place that contains it. Liberty City has been built twice and San Andreas twice over — both are one record here, and every title’s version keeps its own picture.

Liberty City

The series' stand-in for New York, and the setting of eight Grand Theft Auto titles. The 1997 original drew it from overhead as one of three cities; the 3D era built it as three islands, opened one bridge at a time; the HD era rebuilt it from scratch as four boroughs with the state of Alderney across the water.

The state the series has built twice. In 2004 it covered three cities — Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas — with desert, forest and farmland between them; Grand Theft Auto V rebuilt it around Los Santos alone, with Blaine County to the north.

The Vice City sign lit against a pink sunset as an airliner passes low overhead.

City4 titles

Vice City

A city the series has built more than once under one name. It was one of the 1997 original's three cities, drawn from overhead; Grand Theft Auto: Vice City laid it out for 1986 as art deco beach islands and mainland docks, and Vice City Stories went back two years earlier; Grand Theft Auto VI is set there again, in the state of Leonida, with nothing published yet about how that city is laid out.

City2 titles

London

The only Grand Theft Auto set outside the United States, and the one city the series returned to without rebuilding: London 1969 and London 1961 are played on the same map, north and south of the Thames, with the two expansions separated by eight years rather than by geography.

City1 title

Anywhere City

The setting of Grand Theft Auto 2, and the only city in the series built to resemble no particular real one — a near-future metropolis assembled out of several at once. It is played as three separate districts rather than as one continuous map, each opened in turn.

The gateway arch onto the Cayo Perico airstrip reading Gracias por visitar Cayo Perico, with a hangar, parked aircraft and dense palms beyond it.

GTA Online

Region1 title

Cayo Perico

A private island off the coast, added to Grand Theft Auto Online at the end of 2020 — an airstrip, a guarded compound, a beach on the far side, and no way onto it that does not have to be arranged first.

GTA Online

North Yankton's snow-covered plains, fence lines and bare trees running to a flat white horizon.

GTA V

State1 title

North Yankton

The snowbound state Grand Theft Auto V opens in, nine years before the rest of it: the town of Ludendorff, a bank, and the job that goes wrong enough to set up everything after it.
