Love's package needs authenticating and the old man is taking it to Pike Creek in a Securicar. The Cartel know the route. The job is to be behind the van for the length of Shoreside Vale and stop anything reaching it.
It is the only escort mission in GTA III and it does the one thing escort missions have to do properly: the thing being escorted is genuinely fragile and genuinely worth protecting.
The van drives itself and the attackers come in Cartel Cruisers from behind and alongside. Getting ahead of it means the next car to arrive reaches it first.
Putting an attacking Cruiser into a wall is faster than destroying it with gunfire and does not require stopping, which the escort cannot afford.
Its destruction ends the mission. Claude's own survival is secondary to it in a way very few missions in this game arrange.

Left for dead by his partner during a bank job and freed from a prison transport by an explosion he had nothing to do with. Says nothing at all for the length of the story and works his way through every organisation in Liberty City regardless.
