Catalina has a new man and wants Carl to race him: a silent figure in a leather jacket whom she calls Claude and who does not say a word about any of it. He is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto III, three years before the events of that game, and this is the only time the series puts him on screen outside it.
The race starts at The Panopticon and runs the Wu Zi Mu course backwards to a finish near Montgomery, in a ZR-350 on off-road tyres. There is no fee and no pink slip: what Catalina hands over at the end is the deed to a garage in San Fierro, and then she leaves for Liberty City with Claude.
This is a race for property rather than for money, which is why it is the last thing that happens in the countryside. Losing it is not fatal — the race can be run again — but nothing else opens until it is won.
The route retraces the Wu Zi Mu race roughly backwards, from The Panopticon through Red County to a finish near Montgomery, so anyone who has just run that mission already knows the road. The car is a modified ZR-350 on off-road tyres, which grips the rural surfaces better than it looks as though it should.
