London's underworld belongs to the Crisp brothers, a double act: Albert does the thinking and gives the orders, Archie is the muscle, and the work comes from both at once. Their war with Harold Cartwright and Jack Parkinson runs the length of the story, and Cartwright's claim to be frightened of nothing is taken as an invitation.

Then there is Hans Nemesis, codename of the leader of an Austrian terrorist cell. His plot to swap Britain's potatoes for explosive ones was foiled eight years earlier. He has come back with a stolen mobile nuclear launcher.
