Grand Theft Auto 2
October 1999DMA DesignAnywhere City
The last top-down entry, set in a near-future Anywhere City. Its distinguishing idea was rival gangs whose respect for the player rose and fell independently, so working for one cost standing with another.

Anywhere City
The setting of Grand Theft Auto 2, and the only city in the series built to resemble no particular real one — a near-future metropolis assembled out of several at once. It is played as three separate districts rather than as one continuous map, each opened in turn.

Protagonist
Claude Speed
The protagonist of Grand Theft Auto 2, named by the game's own live-action promotional film rather than by anything in its missions. He works every gang in all three of Anywhere City's districts, which is the point of the game: standing gained with one is standing lost with its rivals. Nothing in the series connects him to Grand Theft Auto III's Claude.
