GTA: San AndreasLos Santos

Wrong Side of the Tracks

Mission 17 of 105Story mission

01/03

Briefing

A carriage of Vagos is leaving Los Santos by rail with a shipment on board, and Big Smoke's answer is a single dirt bike with Carl driving and himself on the pillion. The mission is a chase along the track out of Unity Station with Smoke shooting at the front carriage and Carl doing everything else.

It is the most notorious mission in San Andreas, and the reason is entirely mechanical: Smoke's accuracy depends on where Carl puts the bike, and nothing on screen says so. Get the position right and it is over in a minute.

02/03

Objectives

  1. Drive to Unity Station
  2. Get on the motorbike with Big Smoke, chase down the Vagos gang members and take them out
  3. Keep up with the front carriage of the train so Big Smoke can shoot the Vagos gang members
  4. Take Big Smoke back to his house

Walkthrough

  1. Where the bike has to be

Ride alongside the front carriage rather than behind the train, and stay off the track itself. That is the position the mission scores, and it is the difference between Smoke hitting his targets and emptying a magazine into the side of a train.

  2. Distance, not speed

Too close is as bad as too far — crowding the carriage costs Smoke his accuracy. Hold a steady gap parallel to the train and let him work, and take the roadblock on the track into account before it arrives rather than after.

  3. The ride back

The mission does not end when the last Vago drops. Big Smoke still has to be taken home to Idlewood, and losing the bike on the way back after winning the chase is a real way to fail it.

Where this mission leads

Who this mission brings together, and the ground it covers.

  • Playable

Carl Johnson, as they appear in GTA: San Andreas.

Home in Los Santos after five years in Liberty City for his mother's funeral, and stopped by the same two police officers who drove him out. Rebuilding the family's standing turns into rebuilding most of the state's.

  • Gives the job

Melvin Harris, as they appear in GTA: San Andreas.

The friendliest man on Grove Street and the one who sold it. His route from the set's elder statesman to the crack trade's chief beneficiary is the story's spine.
