The filling station in Dillimore is the target Catalina cases first and abandons fastest: the glass at the counter is bulletproof and there is nothing to be taken through it. What is worth having is parked outside, which is a tanker and its trailer.
So the robbery becomes a haulage job with the shopkeepers in pursuit. The rig has to reach Catalina's buyer at RS Haul over in Flint County with the trailer still attached, and Mr Whittaker pays $5,000 for it.
The objective says so in as many words: the trailer must still be on the back when the rig arrives. Reversing, tight corners and anything that jack-knifes the unit are what disconnect it, so the drive is about lines rather than speed.
The pursuit starts at the forecourt and is on the road behind rather than shooting from cover. An articulated tanker will not outrun anything, and it does not need to — the buyer is reached by driving steadily rather than by losing them.
