N.O.E.

Mission 75 of 105Story mission

01/03

Briefing

N.O.E. stands for nap-of-the-earth, and it is exactly what the mission asks: fly a loaded Rustler from Verdant Meadows out to Angel Pine and back without ever getting high enough to be seen on radar.

There is no combat in it at all. The difficulty is entirely altitude discipline over terrain that rises and falls the whole way, and it pays $15,000 for a round trip that ends with the aircraft stopped on the strip.

Objectives

  1. The plane is loaded and ready to go
  2. Fly into the corona to trigger the drop
  3. Return to the airfield and land
  4. Bring the plane to a stop anywhere on the landing strip

Walkthrough

  1. Under the radar

Climbing is what fails this mission, and the terrain between the strip and Angel Pine does not stay flat. Flying the contours — down into the valleys rather than over the ridges — is the whole technique.

  2. The corona

The drop is triggered by flying through a marker rather than by any input, so the approach to it is an aiming problem at low level. Lining up early costs less than correcting late.

  3. Landing

The mission is not finished in the air: the Rustler has to come back and stop on the strip. A landing that overruns or cartwheels at this point loses a mission that has otherwise been flown perfectly.
