An Extended Look: what to expect on 27 August
Rockstar's longest showing of Grand Theft Auto VI since the announcement airs on 27 August. Here is when it starts, where to watch it, and the questions it walks in with.
Grand Theft Auto VI has been shown twice. Two trailers, a handful of character pages and a release date is the entire public record of the most anticipated game of the decade — which is why a broadcast Rockstar has chosen to call an Extended Look matters more than the name suggests.
The staggered timing is unusual and worth planning around. The Netflix premiere runs six hours ahead of the versions on Rockstar's own channels, so the first wave of reaction will be well under way before most people can watch it for themselves.
Why this one is different
Trailers are built to sell an atmosphere. They are cut fast, they avoid interface, and they tell you almost nothing about how a game plays. Rockstar has spent two of them establishing Leonida as a place and Jason and Lucia as people, and has said essentially nothing about what a player does there.
An extended format is where that usually changes. It is long enough to show systems rather than moments, and it lands close enough to release that what it shows should be close to what ships.
What is still genuinely unknown
It is worth being precise about the size of the gap, because a great deal of what circulates as knowledge about this game is inference. Rockstar has confirmed the state, the city, five further named regions, eight characters, the platforms and the date. On the question of what you actually do — how the two leads work, what structure the story takes, what the map looks like end to end, what happens online — the public record is empty.
- How the game handles two leads, and what a player controls
- The shape of the map beyond the regions Rockstar has named
- Mission structure, progression and how much of the state is open from the start
- Anything at all about an online component
- Whether a version is planned for any platform beyond PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
What happens here on the night
This page is built to absorb what comes out of it. Confirmed details become records the moment they are stated, which means the essentials on our Grand Theft Auto VI hub, the cast, the map of Leonida and this coverage all move together rather than one at a time.
If the Extended Look does what an extended look usually does, the list above gets considerably shorter on 27 August.
